UGC API

Building on the TikTok and Meta APIs yourself vs using UGC API

You can integrate TikTok's Content Posting API, Meta's Instagram and Facebook APIs and the YouTube Data API directly. Many teams should. Here is what that work involves, so you can decide with real numbers.

Updated

What a direct integration takes

TikTok

  • Register an app, add Login Kit and the Content Posting API, and request the video.publish scope.
  • Until TikTok audits your app, all Direct Post content is private, and only up to 5 users can post in 24 hours to private accounts.
  • Pass the audit, which reviews your posting UX: creator info, privacy picker with no default, interaction toggles, commercial content disclosure and music usage consent.
  • Verify your media domain for PULL_FROM_URL, or implement chunked FILE_UPLOAD.
  • Handle 6 requests per minute per user token and per-creator daily caps.

Instagram and Facebook

  • Create a Meta app, pick Instagram API with Instagram Login or with Facebook Login, and request instagram_business_content_publish or instagram_content_publish.
  • Complete Business Verification and App Review with a screencast for each permission, to get Advanced Access for accounts you don't own.
  • Implement the container flow: create, poll status until FINISHED, publish before the container expires at 24 hours. Carousels need a child container per item.
  • Track Meta's per-account publishing limit and Page Reels limits.
  • Add the Facebook Pages permissions and the 3-phase Reels upload for Facebook.

YouTube

  • Create a Google Cloud project, configure OAuth consent, and pass Google's verification for the upload scope.
  • Live within the default quota of 100 videos.insert calls per day per project, or apply for an extension with a compliance audit.

Then the ongoing work

  • Token refresh and reconnect flows for four platforms.
  • Media hosting, transcoding to each platform's spec, and cleanup.
  • A queue and scheduler, with retries that don't double-post.
  • Error mapping from four APIs into something your users understand.
  • Keeping up with API version changes and policy updates.

A realistic timeline for doing it yourself

Platform reviews run on their own schedule. Meta Business Verification and App Review can each take days to weeks, and rejections mean another round with a new screencast. TikTok's audit reviews your live posting UX, so you build the full UI before you can apply. Google's OAuth verification for the YouTube upload scope is a separate review. None of these timelines are in your control, and none of them are one-time: permissions, policies and API versions change, and each change can mean another review.

While you wait, unaudited TikTok posts stay private and Meta's Standard Access only covers accounts with a role on your app. You can build and test, but you can't launch to real users.

Costs people forget

  • Media storage and egress while platforms fetch your files.
  • An on-call path for token failures that break scheduled posts at night.
  • Support time explaining platform errors to users.
  • Re-recording review screencasts when your UI changes.

When to build it yourself

  • Posting is your core product and you need every platform field.
  • You post very high volume, where per-post cost outweighs engineering time.
  • You must show your own brand on every platform consent screen.

When UGC API makes sense

  • Posting is a feature, not the product. You'd rather ship this week.
  • You don't want to own four review processes and their renewals.
  • Your posting is UGC-shaped: slideshows, short videos, many accounts.

Many teams start on UGC API and move a platform in-house later once volume justifies it. Our guides on the TikTok audit and Meta App Review are useful either way. When you're ready to try, start with the quickstart or check pricing.

FAQ

Can I use TikTok's API without an audit?

Yes, but TikTok restricts unaudited apps to private posts, up to 5 posting users per 24 hours, and the accounts must be private.

Do I need Meta App Review to post to Instagram?

To post for accounts you don't own or manage, Meta requires Advanced Access, which means App Review and Business Verification.

Is the YouTube upload quota enough for a UGC app?

Google's default is 100 videos.insert calls per day per project. Beyond that you need a quota extension.

Can I switch from UGC API to my own integration later?

Yes. Users would reconnect to your own app, since platform tokens are tied to the app that requested them.
